Editing Process

We started editing the film on the 23rd of November, after we had filmed the second scene when Chloe walks into the college building.

Here is the editing process from the 9th of January, in which we have begun editing scenes filmed at Leah's (Chloe's) house.

Then on January 11th we began editing the title. We decide to create a moving title, where all the letters come together and so we had to create a nested sequence.

On January 16th, we had filmed some shots for the title sequence and so we began editing them together, while also adding music to the shots. We also had filmed the classroom scene and canteen scene which we also edited together.

Once we had most of the shots/scenes filmed, we started editing the sound. We did this by reducing the volume of some shots where the sound was too loud and increasing the volume for others. We also put effects on the sound, such as exponential fade to make the transitions more smooth and to fade the sound out/in. We began doing this on the 23rd of January and it took us a while to edit the music and
sound of all the shots we had so far.

By January 30th, we finally had our final scene (the grave yard scene) filmed. This meant that we were then able to edit it together, add music to it and add effects.

On Wednesday February 15th, we had finally completed a rough cut of our film. Once our rough cut was done, we found that various shots needed redoing and some scenes didn't work and so needed some extra shots adding to it, along with some more effects to create a more "Haunted" atmosphere. We also sent out an audience questionnaire to get more feedback and suggestions on any improvements we could make. From this we found that there were more shots that needed redoing and some more editing to the sound.

The first improvement we did, on the 2nd of March, was fix the music at the end of the title sequence, this was because our audience feedback said that it ended too abruptly and it seemed a little odd. So to fix this, we extended the music into the first scene, and put the exponential fade effect on it to have it fade out. We also improved the sound in the classroom scene as our audience feedback said when Chloe spoke, the background noise went really quiet which was a little odd.

The next improvement we did, on the 3rd of March, was add the replacement voice over and diary entry as it was said that it was too quiet and too long. We shortened it down by about 10 seconds. We also added a new voice over in the grave yard scene to explain the ending to the audience as many said that it was too confusing.

On March 6th we added the ending credits to our film and added some music to it too. Our final cut of our film was now almost complete.

Also on March 6th, we changed the font of our title as it was suggested to us that the previous font (in our rough cut) looked like it was for a Western film. As our film is a thriller, and we want to portray it as a thriller, we thought it was best that we changed this.

On March 9th we began editing parts of the graveyard scene that we re-filmed after our audience feedback. We first began editing the arc shot which people said was too fast and abrupt which looked odd. When filming this time we made sure to do it slower and did it multiple times. However, this resulted in it being too slow so we had to edit the speed of it to make it quicker, to make it appear as though Chloe is walking at an average speed. however the POV shot and eye movement in this shot was much better and realistic.

On March 9th we also added the new shots of Amy in the grave yard as people said there were not enough shots of her.

For the shot of her walking under the arc (above), we tilted it downwards. However, when filming a part of the tilt move significantly quicker than the rest of it which we did not notice. We then had to make that specific part of the tilt slower while leaving the rest of the shot at normal speed.

We also edited the colour of the shots with Amy in to convey that she is in a different "world" to Chloe. As well as this, we added a new ending to the film, which we believe to be more effective. The new ending has Amy at the grave saying "Chloe, I miss you".

We also wanted to add another mask, like in the bathroom scene, of Amy in the graveyard however when doing this we realised that it was not the best option for this scene and would look too repetitive if we did it too many times.
We also began deleting unnecessary shots where there was a bit too much walking.

On the 10th of March we began doing the final touches to our filming and adding two small shots that were re-filmed (the classroom shot and the canteen shot). We were making sure that the sound and transitions were running smoothly as well as ensuring the film was up to its best standard. In this photo, we had to decrease part of the music as we could not hear the dialogue clearly when Amy says at the grave "I miss you Chloe", we then increased the sound back to it's normal level for it then to fade out.

On the 13th March, we had finally finished our final rough cut and posted a questionnaire to get audience feedback. Depending on the feedback, we will most likely just make a few small changes after this.

On the 14th of March, we got the audio from our film, as well as the audio recording of the radio trailer, and edited together a radio trailer.

On the 15th of March, we continued making some finishing tweaks and to into account our audience feedback. Our audience feedback pointed out a few errors we made (breaking continuity) and so we fixed this as well as going over sound and making sure the film runs smoothly.
